  • Note : AFAIK there is no graphics due to memory constraints (48k)

  • Nice! thanks for the pictures.

  • Why do evil guys have deep, rich voices? :| (James Earl Jones voice)

Yeah. I think he should also say Mwahahaha as well :-)

  • The Pawn running under DOS (DOSBox on Android) in a magnetic game interpreter :

  • that's pretty cool. do save games work, i wonder?

For the remastering project, we're trying to significantly improve the mobile experience. We have a map, a compass and clickable text.

Of course, you can still type things. People have been asking for word completion in the text box. This is a great idea. I'm going to try implementing this as part of our Guild of Thieves development then retro fit it to The Pawn as well.

If you have one or two, dropbox them and I will test! :)

  • I just meant, if you type save then Y in the dosbox emulated version on Android, whether the save game really makes it out to Android, so that you can then do "Load" and get it back.

  • Ah, got it. Will try it and report back, but both ways

  • Ok. Two problems.

    1. In the android version I created a save game file successfully. The load function shows that it is there. To test it, I resetted the game, verified that it was reset (original startup location etc) and then loaded the save game, and I was back where I were. (Note : bug report filed).
    2. I searched for the save game, but could not find it.
    3. In the DOS version I created a save game (after moving a couple of locations around), located it, but there is no way for me to instruct the Android version to look for that save file.
  • The save games from the remastered versions are not compatible with the originals.

Turned out the originals used to encrypt the save games to prevent tampering. We dont't do that anymore. Also the remastered saves might contain additional information.

  • Ah, then it is not worth the hassle :)

  • sorry for the confusion.

  • No problem! Was worth a try.

  • The Pawn is also available for the 128k Spectrum, also without graphics. It looks the same as the 48k version.

  • Shame it didn't have graphics for the Spectrum. Perhaps it was to do with the wierd way spectrum graphics worked.

    Here's the Amstrad PCW.

  • Also, here's Mac User;

  • "Your Computer", Jan 1987

  • Cool. Will be digging out a ton of emulators and get a live screenshot wherever possible

  • I've not seen anything that draws the little "drop-down" scrolls the games used to have on actual machines. Perhaps a whole machine emulator will do it.

The games had animated scrolls that "unrolled" and Corruption had little "filofax" type pages that unfurled.

  • some C64 screenshots:

here is another set, with a more visually pleasing color mapping. I find these on some level even more amazing than the 16 bit ones. What you can do with 16 fixed colors..

  • Nice pictures! The C64 was so popular that it warranted having all the artwork redrawn especially for it.

I think? some of the other versions used the C64 pictures as "cameos". Where you could get a "sample" version of the picture as well as the 16 bit pictures.

The c64 pictures were also used on all other platforms that couldn't run the 16 bit pictures. Often they were converted, but the originals looked the best of the c64.

That has been annoying me for years. Was seriously hooked on these games 30 years ago and have tried to play them on UAE several times, but those scroll menus just won't work. Quite strange, since it seems like a simple thing. Ruins the retro experience!

Just got hold of an old C64 and recently bought Jinxter and The Pawn again...guess I'll have to find an old Amiga as well. Great to see the old pictures!
